釀酒人隊後援投手威爾史密斯前天出賽被主審抓包手上塗抹不明物質，最後被趕出場，經過調查，大聯盟昨果斷做出判決，宣布將處分他8場禁賽，史密斯十分不滿，並強調：「天氣冷又乾燥，我在手臂上塗了松焦油與防曬液，我只是忘了擦掉就上場，因為當時我很急著要上場，就是這樣。」並打算上訴。
史密斯在前天出戰勇士隊時7局下接替隊友登板，但他投出觸身球保送後，被勇士隊總教練岡薩勒斯質疑，手臂上似乎有塗抹不明物質，被主審驅逐出場，最後釀酒人以1比10不敵勇士。
岡薩勒斯說：「他的手臂應該要跟平常一樣，卻很醒目，散發出來的反光很刺眼，你應該從球員休息室看看，真的很明顯。」
不過勇士隊一壘手佛瑞曼認為，「每位投手都會這樣做，就是為了要更握緊球，所以我們才不會被他們丟到頭，但下一次要藏得好一點。」
釀酒人隊總教練康索為子弟兵叫屈，「威爾只是想知道問題的嚴重性，他的爭論點為禁賽的長度。」去年洋基隊投手皮內達也曾在脖子上塗抹松焦油被發現後被趕出場，結果遭禁賽10場，等於才跳過1至2次先發。但後援投手幾乎天天要準備，若史密斯缺陣太久，無疑是對戰績不佳的釀酒人隊戰力雪上加霜。
他補充，「禁賽8場對後援投手來說時間太長了點，這會讓你的球隊很傷，打擊球員士氣，這不是很好。」
